Minister McGrath welcomes the publication of the eighth Annual Report of the Tax Appeals Commission

The Minister for Finance, Mr. Michael McGrath T.D., has welcomed the publication of the eighth Annual Report of the Tax Appeals Commission (TAC), which has been laid before the Dáil and is also published on the Commission’s website at http://www.taxappeals.ie/en/annual-report .
In 2023 the TAC resolved just over 1500 appeals representing tax under appeal of €1.386 billion, reduced its appeal numbers by nearly 25 per cent, scheduled over 400 hearings at a value of €1.4 billion, and issued 175 determinations valued at circa €409 million. The Minister, noting the significant progress made by the TAC during 2023, said:
“ The Tax Appeals Commission continues to provide an efficient, fair and cost effective appeals process for the taxpayers of the country which provides citizens with an accessible alternative to the Courts for tax appeals“
The Minister also welcomed the introduction of a new Case Management System at the TAC, which is already bringing greater efficiency in the processing of appeals and ensures that taxpayers can easily lodge and manage their appeal. The Minister said:
“The Commission has developed a fully functional modern case management system which has automated a significant numbers of processes and further improved the efficiency of the appeals process for all parties”
Launching the TAC Annual Report with the Minister, the Chairperson of the TAC, Ms. Marie-Claire Maney said:
“The Tax Appeals Commission strives each year to modernise and improve efficiency. The new portal for filing taxpayers’ notices of appeal and the case management system demonstrates that commitment to modernity and efficiency.”
The appeals considered by the TAC in 2023 covered every part of the tax system including Income Tax, Value Added Tax, Capital Gains Tax, Capital Acquisition Tax, Corporation Tax, Vehicle Registration Tax, and Customs charges and tariffs.
